Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films slow-drift between the rational world (anchored by pop music, routine work life, and mundane conversation) and a hallucinatory world where plots inexplicably loop back on themselves, characters shape shift without warning and ancient fables come to life.
Tropical Malady (2004) tracks the courtship of two young men. The first half of the movie they exchange cassette tapes, saccharine proclamations and a goodbye that has them licking each others' clinched fists. The second half of the movie the two men enter the dark tangles of the jungle where specters and messengers from the spiritual world abound. One of them transforms into a tiger and a hunt to the death ensues. The rest is a sweatsoaked, fever dream. Amazing!
